powerpivot data model inside a separate file?

  • Question

  • Is information technology possible to connect to a powerpivot-data-model and information inside 1 excel-file, from a pivot tabel inside another excel-file?

Why do I enquire this question, you may wonder?

Well, I am looking for an easy to use datawarehouse-solution. The SSIS and SSAS solutions may exist to big for me to larn in a short time. But I want to maintain my datawarehouse information model only once. Although Powerpivot is meant for Adhoc-reporting, I don't think it will be used that fashion. My users volition want to keep their pivot tabels (and therefore their Excelfiles with data models).

And so after a menstruation of time, I volition be stuck with many (the same) information models. So when the data model changes (considering the source information model changes), I volition take to change many information models, and I don't want that.

I realize the functioning will not be equally good, simply I want my data model inside one Excel file (and no pivot tables inside this file), and on the other hand many Excel files with Pivot tables all referring to the same Excel-data-model-file.

What is your stance on this? I promise y'all have better ideas, considering I dont even like this solution (if it is fifty-fifty possible). But the thing is, I want to maintain my data model in 1 place.

  • The PowerPivot cube has to be in the workbook unfortunately. SSAS is the solution for what you describe.

You could always build the data in a standard Access RDB or SQL server, and build the PowerPivot model from these. You would still have many models, but just i data source, so information technology would be a chip more controlled.

I realize the performance volition not be as good, but I desire my data model inside i Excel file (and no pin tables inside this file), and on the other manus many Excel files with Pivot tables all referring to the same Excel-information-model-file.

What is your stance on this? I hope you have better ideas, because I dont even like this solution (if it is even possible). Merely the thing is, I want to maintain my data model in 1 identify.
